Most of the surfing in Banten clusters around Bayah, a stretch of coast near Sawarna that holds the majority of the region's breaks and works as the natural base for a session or a longer trip.
This is reef country. Nearly every spot breaks over coral, most of it live, with only a single sand-bottom beach break in the mix. That shapes how you approach the place: the waves tend to have more form and power than a typical beachbreak, but the bottom demands respect at low water and on bigger days. Bayah Reef and the nearby setups are the kind of waves that reward decent positioning and reef-savvy feet.
The swell window is straightforward. These breaks want energy from the south through the southwest, which is exactly the direction the Indian Ocean delivers through the main surf season, so the coast rarely sits flat when the Southern Ocean is firing. A handful of spots also take in west and west-southwest swell, giving a little more range on days when the angle shifts. Wind matters just as much here: a northeast breeze grooms most of the lineups cleanest, with northwest working at a couple of others, so early sessions before the sea breeze fills in tend to be the smart call.
Tide is forgiving across the region. Mid tide suits every break, and most also handle high and low, so you can usually find something surfable through much of the cycle rather than being locked to a narrow window. Size requirements sit in a practical range, with most spots wanting waist-to-head-high swell to start working and the standout reefs holding size well into the double overhead range when a big pulse arrives.
In terms of who it suits, Banten leans intermediate. Most of the coast rewards surfers who are comfortable reading a reef and picking their moment, and a few spots step up into genuine expert territory when the swell gets serious. There is still room for less experienced surfers, though. Bayah Beach and Inside Lefts are the more approachable options, with the beach break in particular offering a softer, sand-bottom introduction on smaller days.
