Surfing in Kiribati

Surfing in Kiribati centres on remote coral atolls in the Central Pacific, where nearly every wave breaks over reef rather than sand. This is a reef-and-dead-coral coastline at heart, so most lineups reward surfers who are comfortable over shallow bottoms, with a single beach break offering an occasional softer alternative.

The dominant setup faces north and west. Swell from the north, north-northwest, and northwest lights up spots right across the country, and west and west-northwest angles work almost as widely, while southwest and south pulses turn on a smaller share of breaks. Trade winds tend to blow from the southeast and northeast, so it pays to match wind and swell against a spot's orientation. Tides are forgiving here, with waves running through low, mid, and high across the atolls.

Most spots suit intermediate surfers, with a couple of expert-only reef waves and one beginner-friendly option in the mix. Waves generally need around two feet to get going and can build to roughly eight to ten feet on the bigger days. Notable breaks include Whalers Anchorage near Napari, plus Annie's and Bridge's Point around Tabwakea. As always, compare swell, wind, tide, and season against each spot's characteristics before you paddle out.
