Seenu, the Maldives' southernmost atoll straddling the equator, is a compact cluster of reef breaks that reward surfers willing to travel to the far end of the archipelago. Every wave here breaks over coral reef, most of it dead coral, so the setups are punchy and defined rather than forgiving beach peaks. The breaks are spread across a handful of islands, with Gan holding the densest concentration and Hithadhoo, Hulumido, and Meedhoo each adding a spot of their own.
Most of the surf spots in Seenu face the swell that matters most in the Maldives: consistent south, south-southwest, and southwest energy from distant Southern Ocean storms, with several reefs also picking up south-southeast and southeast angles. That southern exposure is what makes the region tick, and the Maldivian season broadly follows the southwest monsoon from roughly March through October, when groundswell is most reliable. A modest 2 ft is enough to wake the shallower reefs, while the standout setups can hold size well overhead when a bigger pulse arrives.
Wind is the daily variable to watch. The reefs here favor offshore flow from the northeast and northwest, so mornings and light-wind windows tend to produce the cleanest faces before the sea breeze fills in. Tides are forgiving: most spots work across high and mid tide, and several hold up at low as well, giving you a wide window to score once swell and wind line up.
This is an advanced-leaning zone. The majority of the breaks suit experienced surfers, with a couple more approachable on the right day for confident intermediates, so it rewards reef-wave experience over first-timers. Notable spots include Air Equator Lefts, Approach Lights, and Gaukendi Bridge, names that hint at the runway and channel-marker geography around Gan. As the southernmost outpost of the country, Seenu also tends to be quieter than the busier central atolls, which is a large part of its appeal for surfers chasing uncrowded reef.
The practical read: come with south in the forecast, a northerly-quarter breeze for offshore, and mid-to-high tide, and this remote atoll delivers clean, powerful reef waves with room to spread out.
