Approach Lights surf guide

Approach Lights is a surf spot located near Gan, with waves breaking over a live coral reef right in front of the new runway. The Airport Lights usually help mark the safer, more rideable sections of the reef, especially at higher tides. While the outside sets can get pretty big, sometimes reaching over 10ft (3m), it's generally best to ride smaller swells for a more comfortable experience.

This spot works best with a south-west swell direction, but it can also pick up swells from the south-east. It handles swell sizes starting at around 2ft (0.6m), making it versatile for various conditions. The waves are primarily left-breaking, which can be exciting for those who prefer that direction. For the best experience, you'll want north-west winds and can surf during low, mid, and high tides. However, keep in mind that this spot is more suitable for expert surfers due to the challenges presented by the coral reef.

If you're thinking of getting to the line-up, you could paddle across the wide lagoon from Equator Village, but many surfers prefer hopping on a dhoni for a quicker and safer trip. It’s a common way to join the session and get right into the action without the hassle of a longer paddle.
