Surfing in Michoacán

Michoacán sits on Mexico's Pacific coast, a rugged, lightly developed stretch that trades crowds for consistent, south-facing swell exposure. The coastline opens to the south and west, so most spots here fire on south through west swells, with the sweet spot running from south and southwest around to west and west-northwest. Autumn, spring, and summer all deliver, and summer south swells out of the Southern Hemisphere are a reliable engine for the region's better days.

The signature of surfing in Michoacán is its river mouths. Points like Rio Nexpa, near the village of Barra de Nexpa, throw long, walling lefts when the sand lines up, and La Ticla offers a similar river-mouth setup that draws surfers chasing length and power. These breaks work over sand, boulders, and the odd patch of reef, which gives them more shape and punch than a typical beach break. Alongside them, sandy beach breaks near towns like Guagua, La Brisa, and Las Salinas del Padre round out the variety, offering shifting peaks when the points get busy or the sandbanks move.

Wind is worth watching. The cleanest conditions arrive with offshore flow from the northeast quadrant, roughly north through northeast, which grooms the faces before the afternoon sea breeze fills in, so early starts pay off. Tides are forgiving here: most spots stay rideable through much of the tidal range, meaning you can usually find something working across the day rather than timing a narrow window.

This is a coast that leans toward confident surfers. Several spots reward intermediate and expert ability, with powerful river-mouth walls and the occasional bigger day pushing well overhead. Beginners aren't shut out entirely, but the choices are limited, and the mellower sandy peaks are the place to start. A quiver-friendly approach suits it well: a fish or shortboard for the punchier river-mouth days, and a longboard for smaller, cleaner mornings.

On size, the region comes alive once there's a bit of swell in the water, roughly chest-high and up, and the standout points handle well overhead when a solid pulse arrives. Notable spots include Rio Nexpa, La Ticla, and El Faro, while easier sessions are best found at the softer beach peaks. Come prepared, set your expectations on quality over convenience, and Michoacán repays the effort with long, uncrowded lefts along a genuinely wild slice of Pacific coastline.
