Virginia is a beach-break coast centered on Virginia Beach, where the Atlantic shoreline and its shifting sandbars do most of the work. The majority of breaks here sit over sand and come alive on swell from the east through the southeast, with south and easterly pushes also filling in the lineups. The reliable offshore is a west or southwest wind, which cleans up the faces when it lines up with a decent swell.
The heart of surfing in Virginia is Virginia Beach, home to most of the region's breaks and a long-running surf scene; the city has hosted the East Coast Surfing Championships since the 1960s. Notable spots include the 1st Street Jetty and Camp Pendleton near the southern end of the Oceanfront. Farther up the Eastern Shore, quieter zones around Kiptopeke and Chincoteague spread the crowd out, with Fishermans Island marking the southern tip near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay.
Because these are mostly gentle beach breaks, they don't need much to turn on. Many spots start working around waist-high, roughly 2 feet, and hold their shape up to head-high or a bit beyond before the sand stops cooperating. That low entry point makes Virginia a forgiving place to learn, and the roughly even split of beginner, intermediate, and a handful of more demanding breaks means there's room to progress without traveling far.
Tide is flexible here. Most spots work through low and mid tide, and several stay rideable at high, so timing is less about hitting a narrow window and more about matching the sandbar to the swell on the day. The two point setups on the Eastern Shore are the exception, favoring higher tide and a cleaner easterly swell for more experienced surfers.
Autumn is the standout season. As Atlantic hurricane and early-winter storm activity ramps up offshore, Virginia picks up its most consistent groundswell of the year, and lighter, cleaner winds often follow the passing fronts. Summer tends toward smaller, weaker surf, which suits longboards, fish, and SUPs more than it rewards chasing size.
For most surfers the plan is simple: watch for an east-to-southeast swell, hope for a west or southwest wind, and pick a Virginia Beach sandbar that suits the tide. When those pieces line up in the fall, this stretch of coast delivers fun, punchy waves without asking for a big commitment.
