8th Street Jetty Surf Forecast Guide

8th Street Jetty is the only year-round surfing area in Ocean City and one of the best waves in the state. It breaks over sand and picks up both lefts and rights, with pitching, gnarly waves that stay no further than 50 yards (45m) off the jetty. On the 7th Street side you get rights in a southerly, while a nor'easter can send long lefts that barrel.

When It Works

The spot is very consistent, so there is almost always something to ride. It draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with northeast (NE) the best direction. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft and handles about as big as it gets, so there is plenty of range to work with.

Wind and Tide

Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean things up. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. At higher tides keep an eye on the stormwater pipes.

Local Tips

This is intermediate-level surf, and the lineup gets busy when it works. When it is bigger, timing your paddle-out and reading the rips is essential. Note that you can't surf the lefts south of the jetty between 10am and 5pm.

Access

You'll find restrooms, a lifeguard, and a surf shop on hand. Parking options include a car park, metered and roadside spots, all paid. Tags are needed here.
