Abras is the best left on the island, a fickle reef wave that only shows its potential when everything lines up. It breaks over an uneven reef and moves through a few distinct sections: it starts as an open barrel, opens into a carvable wall, then bends into a fast, hollow close-out over the gnarled reef shelf.
When It Works
The wave draws swell from north to northeast (N-NE), with northeast (NE) the best direction, and it needs real size before it turns on. It works from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Consistency is the catch here: it is somewhat inconsistent and the reliance on low tide only narrows the windows, so think of it as a wave to grab on the right day rather than one you can count on.
Wind and Tide
The clean offshore is a southwest (SW) wind, which is rare, but a south to southeast wind will still blow into the barrel. It needs the tide down to break, so low tide is the setting to look for, with a rising tide generally the better of the two.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave, given how hollow it gets and the reef it breaks over. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is working.
Access
Getting in and out is a genuine hassle, with nasty rocks all over the entry and exit.
