Overview
Ackergill is a pair of short, sharp, heavy right-hand reefs breaking over a rock ledge. It's a rare catch that only comes together when the setup is exactly right, so it rewards patience more than anything else.
When It Works
The reefs draw swell from northeast through southeast (NE-SE), with east (E) swell the best match and some east in the swell needed to switch them on. They work from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Both reefs are incredibly inconsistent, so surfable days are few and far between, but the setup can deliver when it finally lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind. Low tide is essential here, so time your session around low tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
These are short, sharp and heavy waves best left to expert surfers. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it works.
Access
Park near the jetty at Ackergillshore and paddle out through the harbour. There's free roadside parking to leave the car.
