Overview
Aitape is a superb left-hand reef break that spins off the point sheltering the town's harbour. The wave peels for around 75 m (225 ft) over dead coral, giving a long, single-direction ride. Aitape is the largest settlement in the area, so the break sits right alongside a working coastal town.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from the northwest through northeast (NW-NE), with north swell the best match. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and stays moderately consistent, so rideable days turn up regularly without the spot being on all the time.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind to clean it up. The left works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Aitape suits intermediate surfers who are comfortable sitting over a reef. The lineup stays quiet, so you can count on plenty of space when it is working.
