Ala Moana Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Ala Moana, also known as Sombrillas, is a left-hand reef break off the tip of Playa Agua Dulce. It breaks over boulders and suits intermediate surfers.

When It Works

The lefts come alive when strong southerly swells reach the coast. It draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with south (S) the best match, and that's when the faster walls and the occasional hollow section show up. The wave works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Because it leans on winter swells, it can be hit or miss, but it holds up reasonably well when the season delivers.

Wind and Tide

Winds blow offshore most of the time, ideally from the northeast (NE). It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

An easy paddling channel makes getting out to the lineup straightforward on this intermediate wave. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, though it tends to draw fewer surfers than Triangulo next door.

Access

There's a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options. Facilities include restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf school.
