More about Albatross Point surfspot
Knowing someone who can negotiate the farmers permission is required to surf Albatross Point, a rare bird which requires a huge swell to refract around into Arohaki Bay and hit multiple left points. It would be possible to take a boat from Kawhia Harbour, but again, local knowledge is essential.
From Hamilton head west on Massey Street, then left onto Tukikaramea Road, out of Hamilton. Turn left onto Kakaramea Road, State Highway 39, heading south. Turn right onto Kawhia Road, State Highway 31. Turn left onto Harbour Road, then turn right to stay on Harbour Road. Continue onto Kawhia Harbour Road. Turn left onto Te Waitere Road. Turn right onto Taharoa Road. At Taharoa, turn right onto Rotopuhoe Road then left onto Taharoa Road again. From here you will need to turn right and see the farmer about crossing his land. Alternativily you can take a boat out from the harbour.
Nearby Aotea Reef is the latest behemoth for the tow crews to challenge outside from Aotea Harbour. Ocean Beach at Kawhia is more exposed black sand beachbreak with few takers.
