Albatross Point surf guide

Albatross Point is a unique surf spot that requires a bit of effort to access. To surf here, you’ve got to know someone who can get permission from the local farmer to cross their land. The point is located in Arohaki Bay and really comes alive when there's a big swell, especially from the south-west. If you're looking for a challenge, heading out by boat from Kawhia Harbour is also an option, but you’ll need to be familiar with the area.

The surf at Albatross Point works best with south-west swells, but it can handle northern swells as well. It breaks over an uneven reef and typically produces left point waves, which can be ideal for intermediate surfers looking for something different. The spot is capable of accommodating swell sizes starting at about 2 feet (0.6 meters), and it works well on low, mid, and high tides. For the best conditions, the wind direction should be coming from the south.

Aside from surfing, Albatross Point is in a good location near Aotea Reef, which has become popular with tow crews looking for big waves. If you're more into beach breaks, Ocean Beach at Kawhia is a nearby option, but it tends to get less attention. Overall, Albatross Point is a spot with its own vibe and challenges, so it's worth checking out if you can navigate the local logistics.
