Anstey's is a beach break on the Bluff that works over a mix of uneven reef and sand, throwing both lefts and rights. It sits just 800m up the beach from Cave Rock, past the lefts of Inbetweens, where slightly less-critical peaks hit the sand on all small to medium swells. When it lights up you get fast, pumping right-hand barrels on a winter south swell, or wedgy lefts in a summer northeast. When it goes overhead it can break a long way out the back.
When It Works
The break pulls in swell from southwest through north to northeast, but it really comes alive on a southeast (SE) swell. It stays very consistent, so there is usually something to ride. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, holding size well as the swell picks up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean it up. Anstey's can break across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, as it tends to draw people escaping the town breaks.
Access
Getting in is easy, with a car park offering free parking plus roadside spots nearby. You will also find restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on hand.
