Overview
Asu is a long, sweeping left-hand reef break on the tiny island of the same name, part of the swell-sucking Hinako Islands off Nias. The lines refract around the island's northern tip, stand up, and pitch down an impressively long and shallow reef of dead coral. Speed is essential to make some of the pinching sections, and it gets heavy at size, which it handles with ease. Reef uplift has taken a toll on wave quality and intensified the ridiculously shallow end section known as the Nuclear Zone.
When It Works
Asu draws swell from south through west, with southwest the best direction. It's a consistent reef that works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft, so there's a wide window from waist-high days up to serious size.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind. The reef works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave that rewards speed and commitment on a long, shallow reef. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's firing.
Access
Getting to Asu is a commitment. The Hinako Islands sit just 8 km (5 mi) off Nias, but a good 65 km (43 mi) and a five-hour boat ride from Teluk Dalam in the south. There are five land camps, and getting in and out over the reef is a real coral scramble, so booties are essential.
