Avalanche is a right-hand reef that breaks over a rock ledge and sand. When the sand builds up just right on the reef, it can be one of the most fun waves around: southwest swells bend in and the rocky outcrop catches and focuses their power, so the wave runs down the line at varying speed with the odd hollow pocket.
When It Works
It draws swell from east through south to southwest, with southeast (SE) swell the best match. The wave is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. It tends to be moderately consistent, so it takes the right setup to line up.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind. Avalanche can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a busy lineup when it fires.
Access
There are restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop nearby, plus a car park with free parking.
