Overview
Avana is a short right-hand reef break off the tip of Motutapu, close to the popular accommodation at Muri Beach. It sits on the windward side of the island yet still ranks as one of the most surfed spots around. The wave breaks over live coral and doesn't run long, so picking the right one takes patience. Just across the passage there's a smaller right that bodyboarders tend to favour.
When It Works
Avana draws swell from south to north and is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. It's moderately consistent, so decent windows come around without the spot firing all the time. The wave leans more mellow than demanding rather than being a serious test of skill.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind. Avana is best at high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. The shallow reef underneath makes it too dangerous for beginners, and the short peak rewards patient wave selection. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
