Overview
Avellana, also known as Playa Avellanas, is a long strand with a mix of reef and sand peaks plus a rivermouth, giving you a handful of named breaks spread along the beach. Both lefts and rights are on offer, and the choice of peaks means there's usually room to find your own space.
When It Works
Avellana draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest (SW) the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, breaking over a mix of uneven reef and sand. Consistent through spring and summer, it also tends to pick up more swell than nearby Tamarindo, so it's worth a look when other spots are running too small.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. The peaks can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. The beachbreak peaks tend to prefer mid to high water, while the rivermouth comes into its own at low tide.
Local Tips
There's enough variety here for most boards, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards, and it stays approachable for beginners. With several peaks to spread everyone out, the lineup is usually quiet, though it can feel a little reserved. Watch for shallow rocks in places.
Access
You'll find free parking, including a roadside option along the dirt road, plus camping close by. The main lot is unguarded and holds around 50 vehicles.
