Overview
Avoca Beach is one of the most consistent beachbreaks on the central coast, and a longtime hotbed of surfing talent, both young and old. The banks throw up excellent peaks, and the standout is The Point, a hollow right that reels along the rocks.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with east the optimal direction, and it's very consistent. The beachbreak serves up quality peaks in a range of swells. The Point is a hollow, crowded right that pumps on an east to southeast swell; it breaks very close to the rocks the whole way and demands experience, with a strong conveyor rip running through the corner. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest offshore wind, and note that the southern end stays well protected from southerlies. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves suit intermediate surfers, and you can expect a busy lineup when it's on, competitive but usually free of aggro. The Point is the exception, where only the most committed get waves. Beyond the main peak, good beachies run all the way up to North Avoca.
Access
You'll find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop. Parking is plentiful, with a free car park plus paid and roadside options in the central and southern car parks.
