Overview
Bahia Tortuga is a rare arc of sandy beachbreaks just outside Puerto Ayora, the hub of activity on busy Santa Cruz Island. The waves break over sand and peel both left and right, making it an easygoing spot that suits learners well.
When It Works
The bay draws swell from southwest through southeast, with south swell the best match. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and will not take much more than that before it maxes out. Consistency is moderate, but when it lines up you can find some fun corners along the sand.
Wind and Tide
Look for north offshore wind, though the bay is often onshore. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly wave, and the lineup usually stays fairly quiet.
Access
It is roughly a 45-minute walk from town, so pack food and water and carry out your trash to help keep this once-pristine spot clean. Parking is restricted. Closer to town, Playa de la Estacion offers a sketchy, rocky right in front of the Darwin Research Station.
