Baleal Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Baleal is a sandy island village a couple of miles north of Peniche, and it has drawn traveling surfers for more than 20 years. Because it sits on an island, there's almost always a sheltered beach tucked out of the wind, which is a big reason so many of Portugal's learn-to-surf camps are based here. The setup runs from the mellow left reefbreak of Lagide just north of town into miles of open beachbreak, so plenty of surfers can spread out without much friction. There's even a protected bay south of town with a more mediocre beachbreak that stays sheltered from north winds and the biggest swells. You won't find perfection here, Supertubos is a couple of miles south, but keep one eye on the shifting sandbanks and the other on the flagpoles and you can score some fun beachbreaks.

When It Works

The waves break over sand, with rock at the Lagide reef, and you'll find both rights and lefts across the beach and reef zones. Baleal draws swell from northwest to north (NW-N) and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft. Autumn and spring are the seasons to target, when the setup tends to come together best. Overall it's a decent, dependable spot rather than a standout.

Wind and Tide

Look for south-southeast (SSE) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from south-southwest to east-southeast (SSW-ESE). It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

Baleal is a natural fit for beginners, and it suits just about any board, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet with a neutral atmosphere, so it's an easy place to log some relaxed waves.

Access

There's a big parking lot right at Lagide where campers tend to congregate. The beachbreaks to the north are reached via a dirt track that runs along the coast.
