Overview
Bang Tao is a long beach break running along 8 km (5 mi) of tourist sand lined with casuarina trees. Waves peel both left and right over sand, and it's a rare spot to find surf in this area. It's better known for windsurf contests than for waves, but it does have its moments.
When It Works
Bang Tao draws swell from the southwest through west (SW-W), with southwest (SW) the best match. The swell doesn't always push through, so it's only moderately consistent, but when a good one arrives the middle of the beach throws up more empty peaks at low to mid tide. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. The beach can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. The south end is the most sheltered from the wind, while the middle tends to hold the cleaner peaks. Watch for strong rips, especially through those middle sections.
Local Tips
This is a forgiving beach break that suits beginners, and the lineup stays fairly quiet even when it's working.
