Barra do Ceara is a sandy beach break with peaks that break right beside the rivermouth in Fortaleza. The water here is polluted, and that is the honest first thing to know: the waves rarely turn on well enough to outweigh what you are paddling into. Fortaleza has plenty of breaks, but most of them share the same pollution problem and the same crowds. On the history side, this is where Portuguese sailors first landed in 1603.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from northwest through north to east, and northeast swell is the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, with both lefts and rights on offer depending on the sand. Consistency is moderate, so it picks up waves reasonably often without being an everyday option.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest offshore wind. Low and mid tide are the windows to aim for, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves are mellow enough for beginners to have a go. Expect a busy lineup when it is working, with a lot of bodyboards in the water.
Access
There are restrooms, a lifeguard, and a surf shop nearby. Parking is easy to sort out, with a car park offering free parking alongside paid, metered, and roadside options.
