Overview
Barrika is a consistent beachbreak that offers several peaks, shifting with the sandbars. Waves break over a mix of sand and uneven reef, with both lefts and rights on offer. It's a picturesque, relatively quiet spot despite sitting close to urban areas, though the uneven submerged rocks can be dangerous, so pick your peak with care.
When It Works
Barrika draws swell from west through north (W-N), with northwest (NW) swell the best match. The spot works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and does its best work on smaller swells, so it's a good call when other spots are struggling for size.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south (S) wind to groom the peaks. This is strictly a low to mid tide spot, with a rising tide generally the better call — the beach cuts off completely at high tide.
Local Tips
Barrika suits intermediate surfers. The lineup is reasonably uncrowded and the locals are friendly, partly because the high-tide cutoff keeps the beach from getting too popular with beachgoers. One thing to keep in mind: estuarine pollution from Bilbao and Plentzia can affect the water, particularly after heavy rains.
Access
There's plenty of parking, including a car park with free parking. The beach has a lifeguard and showers, and there's camping nearby at Sopelana.
