Beavers/Hazards surf guide

Beavers/Hazards is a pocket beach located just east of Refugio, making it easy to spot from the highway. While the surf here isn’t anything to get overly excited about, it does have its moments, especially during windswells. The setup favors beginners, thanks to its manageable waves and overall vibe. Parking is pretty basic, just some dirt roadside spots, and you need to watch out for the railroad tracks if you're crossing them.

When it comes to surfing, Beavers/Hazards works best with a west swell direction, but can also handle swells coming from the south and northwest. It generally handles wave sizes around 1 ft (0.3 meters), but don’t expect it to manage anything over head high. The breaks at this beach are over both rock and sand, with wave types that include reef. You’ll find the peaks typically provide left and right waves, but conditions can get a bit mushy at times. The peak at the east end offers fat, softer lefts and shorter, hallow rights, while the west end features a right that can be more lined-up but tends to be sectiony. Low tide is the way to go here; high tide can cause backwash that messes things up.

For beginners, Beavers/Hazards can be a fun place to practice and get comfortable with the waves. The preferred wind direction is north, which can improve the surf quality a bit. However, be prepared for crowded conditions at the east peak since it’s easier to access and often attracts more surfers. If it’s too packed, you can always try the west peak for a change of pace.
