Overview
Benone / Magilligan is a long, sandy beachbreak running along Ireland's longest beach, offering around 10km of empty peaks. The waves break over sand and peel both left and right, and the spot is popular with kitesurfers.
When It Works
It draws swell from the northwest through north, with a north (N) swell the best match. There is a long righthander at the east end that is always bigger than the rest of the beach. The break is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south (S) offshore wind, and note that the beach is well sheltered from southwest winds. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a good spot for beginners, with plenty of room to spread out along the beach.
Access
There is free parking, plus restrooms and camping. Access can sometimes be restricted by the Army, since the area includes a firing range.
