Overview
Black Rock is a live-coral reef break on the leeward side, tucked by the golf course next to the airport, and it's the standout wave along this stretch. It isn't a pass but a curve in the reef that bends the prevailing swell into slabby, shacking rights, while the lefts barrel fast off a wedging take-off. Also known as Socials or Golf Course, it carries genuine Polynesian power and rewards surfers who can read its imperfections.
When It Works
The reef takes swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with north swell the best match. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. A wide swell window keeps it moderately consistent, though the trade-off is short rides and the odd close-out when it's firing.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind, which blows steadily here. It comes to life on mid and high tide, with a rising tide the better call. Be wary of scrabbling over the reef once the tide starts dropping.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. Negotiating the coral heads and pitching lips, and the very real chance of getting pitched, takes both skill and guts, and sharks are part of the picture too. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, and give the local bodyboard crew their respect.
