Blacks Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Blacks Beach, also known as Torrey Pines City Beach, is a powerful half-mile stretch of beachbreak and widely regarded as the best in the county. The La Jolla Submarine Canyon funnels swell straight into the sand here, creating three distinct peaks: South Peak, a heavy, perfect left; Middle Peak, a two-way affair where the lefts are usually better; and North Peak, a short but exciting right-hand barrel. Alongside those, shifting phantom peaks and sneaky insiders come and go with the conditions. It's usually the biggest spot around and holds huge swell.

When It Works

The deepwater canyon draws in most any swell with west in it, so Blacks takes swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with west (W) the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, breaking both left and right over sand. Consistency and power are what set it apart. The season runs through autumn, winter and spring, with the best waves from November to February, though it can work year-round.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind. Blacks works across low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. During head-high and smaller swell, lower tides tend to be best, while on large swell it becomes far less tide sensitive.

Local Tips

This is an expert-level wave that rewards shortboards, bodyboards and guns depending on the day's size. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, with a somewhat reserved atmosphere. Come ready to work for your waves and to wear a few solid sets on the head when it's pumping. Watch for severe rip currents, sneaker sets and long hold-downs, and be careful about getting caught inside on a big South Peak set.

Access

Getting in takes commitment. Access is via a steep, rocky path down the bluffs, a long hike that rules out most quick sessions. A gated road off La Jolla Farms Road drops you closer to the South Peak. There's a surf shop nearby, along with free roadside parking.
