Overview
Bog Works is a big-swell reef peak with long walls, and it rewards experts who can commit to size. The wave breaks over an uneven reef and offers both a left and a right, so the swell direction decides which way holds up better on the day. It is a good-quality setup near New Plymouth.
When It Works
The peak draws swell from southwest through north (SW-N), with west (W) the best match for lining up those long walls. It is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so it really comes alive on the bigger days rather than in small surf. Consistency can be patchy, but the good windows are worth waiting for when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind to clean it up. The reef favours low tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call as it fills back in.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave built around size and speed, not a spot to learn on. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it turns on.
Access
From the New Plymouth city centre, head east on Devon Street East, turn left onto Eliot Street, then right onto Octavius Street and find a park. Park near the Mount Bryan Reserve and take the steps down to the reef. There is free roadside parking nearby.
