Boilers/Ranger Station Surf Forecast Guide

Boilers/Ranger Station is a sand-bottom beach break sitting way outside in front of the Ranger Station on Pea Island, where a shipwreck has piled up the sandbars that shape the waves. It's named for the partially submerged boilerplate of that wreck, which juts out of the water hundreds of yards from shore. The water here is probably the cleanest on the Outer Banks, and the peaks turn on and off with the sand, so it rewards a surfer willing to look rather than pull over at the first pack of cars.

When It Works

The bank draws swell from south through north, with northeast (NE) the direction that really lights it up. Outside, lower water and NE swell bring long walling lefts and short, bowly rights to life; on smaller swells it reforms inside after the trough, giving you a second option once the outside goes quiet. It handles a wide range, working from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, so it can hold serious size when the storms deliver. This is a consistent spot, and autumn is prime, when tropical systems and early nor'easters send the swell.

Wind and Tide

Look for west (W) offshore wind to groom it. The sandbars prefer lower water, so low and mid tide are the calls here, with a rising tide generally the better of the two.

Local Tips

This one suits intermediate surfers on a shortboard, or a gun when it jumps in size. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved, so the move is to find your own peak rather than become the twentieth car parked on the same stretch of sand.

Access

It's a walk over the dunes from a free car park, the only way to check it, and there are restrooms and showers on hand plus camping nearby at Oregon Inlet. Watch for soft sand if you pull off the road. There's no lifeguard, mosquitoes can be fierce, and sharks are known to cruise the beach and the shipwreck, so keep your wits about you in the water.
