Brimms Ness - The Bowl is the most western peak on the reef, a jacking, hollow right-hander that tubes over a shallow rock ledge and is strictly for experts. This corner is rocky and famous for rips and boils that can pin surfers in the impact zone. The Vikings named the point Brimms Ness, meaning Surf Point, and the name holds up: if it's flat here, it's flat everywhere. Without a solid late or air drop in your game, it's a better place to watch than to paddle out.
When It Works
The reef pulls in swell from west to north (W-N), and it lights up best on a north (N) swell. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Consistency is a real strength here, so there is usually something to ride even when nearby spots go quiet.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south (S) offshore wind. The reef is at its best around mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and it dislikes extremes of tide as well as west winds. On such an exposed point, wind is often the deciding factor in whether it comes together.
Local Tips
This is expert-only ground given the shallow rock, rips, and boils. Expect a busy lineup when it turns on, since the reliable swell and the narrow window of good conditions tend to draw a crowd.
Access
Park either in the farmyard or out on the point, depending on the state of the track and the landowner's goodwill; there is a car park with free parking. Drive in and out slowly, as the residents are tired of speeding surfers.
