Overview
CC's is a hollow beachbreak at Conway Flat, south of Kaikoura, with its best peaks forming around the rivermouth. It often breaks close to shore, so it suits surfers who are comfortable in punchy, shallow waves. If you want a quieter option, Oaro lies just to the north, facing the same direction and tucked into the mountains.
When It Works
The sand-bottom peaks draw swell from southwest through north to northeast (SW-N-NE), with an east (E) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and breaks both left and right. Consistency is moderate, but when the setup lines up it delivers a decent, hollow beachbreak.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west (W) offshore wind to clean it up. It breaks on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
CC's suits intermediate surfers, though because it frequently breaks close to shore it rewards those confident in shallow conditions. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it's on.
Access
From Kaikoura, head south on State Highway 1 and over the Hundalee Hills, then turn left onto Claverley Road. Turn right onto Conway Flat Road and follow it down to the beach, checking a few spots along the way for different peaks or the rivermouth. Staying on Claverley Road instead lets you check the north side of the Conway River. There's free roadside parking.
