Overview
Capão da Canoa is a long stretch of open beachbreak, roughly 18km of sand throwing up both lefts and rights along a trendy, built-up stretch of coast. The water is clean here thanks to proper sewage treatment. It rewards patience: on a windless day the peaks can come through clean and hollow, but once the wind is up it goes mushy.
When It Works
The banks draw swell from east to south, with south the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and stays moderately consistent, so you get workable windows rather than waves every day. Both lefts and rights break over sand.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind to groom the peaks. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, and weekends and summer draw the bigger crowds to this urbanised stretch. With 18km to play with, there's almost always another empty peak up or down the beach.
Access
A surf school and surf shop are on hand, along with restrooms, showers, camping, and lifeguard cover. Parking is easy, with a car park offering free parking plus roadside spots.
