Capbreton Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Capbreton is a barreling beach break that throws up some of the most intense, hollow waves in the country. The waves break over sand, and the standout Bunkers section serves steep drops into barrels that peel close to shore. Old blockhaus defences have eroded and tumbled across the line-up over the years, helping shape sandbanks that stay consistent while shifting around. It is smaller and more defined than nearby Gaviere, and when it turns on you can score the barrel of a lifetime or a heavy spin-cycle flogging.

When It Works

The banks draw swell from west to northwest (W-NW) and stay usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so you can find anything from waist-high peaks up to double overhead. Both rights and lefts break off the defined peaks. Autumn is the window here, with September through November delivering the goods.

Wind and Tide

Look for east-southeast (ESE) offshore wind, with a workable window running from east to south-southeast (E-SSE). It breaks through most of the tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call. The Bunkers peaks are best from low to mid, while high tide can turn into a vicious semi-closeout that bodyboarders enjoy.

Local Tips

This is a wave for intermediate and expert surfers, ridden on shortboards, fish, bodyboards, and for bodysurfing. Expect a busy lineup, and when it is good it gets very crowded with pros and chargers, so be patient and respectful in the water.

Access

There is a large car park and Aire de Campingcars tucked behind the dunes, well signposted from town. Walk further south and you can find quieter peaks away from the main crowds.
