Overview
Caravans is a fickle river mouth break that offers a right off the rivermouth alongside a shorter, hollower left. The waves shape up over a mix of uneven reef and sand, and the spot sits below a caravan park. It comes into its own when nearby Westport is too big to surf, making it a useful fallback on bigger days.
When It Works
The right is the main draw here, and it needs the right swell to switch on. It draws swell from west to northwest (W-NW), with a west (W) swell the best match. Expect it to work from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, covering everything from smaller days up to solid, more powerful surf.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean up the faces. On the tide, it breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Access
The caravan park overlooking the break has restrooms and camping. Parking is free, with roadside spots available.
