Carcavelos Surf Forecast Guide

Carcavelos is one of Portugal's original and still best beachbreaks, sitting just 15 minutes outside Lisbon. The waves break over sand and can throw heavy, cylindrical barrels, with peaks shifting around on sandbars that need a solid swell to break up the flat summer bottom and shape up properly. Beside the fort at the eastern end, cylindrical lefts roll through, and this is where the city's urban surf culture has always been centered.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest (SW) the best match, when the power steps up and the occasional right appears alongside the lefts. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Autumn is the standout season and winter keeps delivering, while summer runs slower and less consistent. Get the right swell, wind and sand combination and it can get really good.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. Carcavelos breaks on all tides, with mid tide the best call and a rising tide generally the better window.

Local Tips

This is a shortboard-friendly beachbreak that also suits beginners on the smaller days. Expect a busy lineup whenever it's working, given how close it sits to Lisbon, and a generally neutral atmosphere, though the peaks right by the fort are more localized and contested than those farther down the beach. Watch for rips, and on bigger days the paddle gets more demanding and there's a real chance of hitting the bottom.

Access

Parking is paid, with roadside spots and a car park nearby. Facilities are complete, including restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school and a surf shop.
