Overview
Carizalillo is a small, rocky bay set in a secluded cove, where the reef peels along steep headlands. It's a fun, easygoing wave rather than a standout, and it suits all kinds of surfers on just about any board.
When It Works
This is a right that breaks over uneven reef and sand. It draws swell from southeast through south to west (SE-S-W), with southwest (SW) the best direction, and works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. It takes a decent swell to get going, since the bay is often flat on smaller days, when it's really best for beginners. Carizalillo is moderately consistent and comes into its own from spring through autumn.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. It works through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Carizalillo is a great beginner wave, and it takes everything from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. Expect a fairly quiet, somewhat reserved lineup, so give the locals their space.
Access
It's easy to find, though you'll need to tackle a fair few steps down to the bay. There's free roadside parking, and a surf school operates on-site.
