Carmel Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Carmel Beach is one of the prettiest beach breaks around, a half-mile stretch of fine white sand and electric blue water with peaks that shift constantly up and down the beach. The main takeoffs sit around 4th, 8th, and 11th Streets. It can be hit or miss, but when it lines up there are clean, wedgy peaks for everyone, and every so often some serious tubes turn up for whoever is paying attention.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from south to north (S-N), with a west (W) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, giving both lefts and rights along the sand. The peaks change with the banks, so it pays to look before you commit. It can break year-round but is at its best from October through July, and on the right day the quality is genuinely good.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind to clean it up. The kelp and cove give the beach real shelter, so it can stay offshore and rideable when spots nearby are blown out, and it holds up reasonably well against northwest winds. Mid tide is the call here, with a rising tide generally the better window.

Local Tips

This is a shortboard beach that suits intermediate and expert surfers. Expect a busy lineup when it's working, though the half-mile of beach spreads people out and leaves plenty of room to find your own peak. The vibe in the water is friendly. Keep an eye on the heavy shorepound when you're paddling out and coming in.

Access

Head to the end of Ocean Avenue through Carmel, where there's free roadside parking by the beach. Snagging a spot is easy enough midweek, but on weekends and holidays you'll need some luck.
