Carola surf guide

Carola, located in Puerto Baquerizo (Wreck Bay), is one of the more well-known surf spots in the Galapagos. It’s about a 10-minute boat ride or a 2 km walk from the port. This spot is a good choice if you're looking for consistent waves, but it’s mainly for intermediate surfers because of the conditions. The landscape features boulder-strewn lava rock, which adds to the vibe but also makes it a bit tricky to navigate.

When it comes to the surf, Carola delivers a long right point break that works best with northwesterly swells but can handle some southwesterly and northern swell too. The waves here can range from around 1.2 meters (4 ft) to 3.7 meters (12 ft) and typically have a fast, heavy drop. This can be challenging due to the southeast trade winds that can blow into the barrel, making the wave more difficult to ride. Low to mid-tide is ideal for catching the waves here, so time your session accordingly. Be prepared for fierce duck-diving since you might get stuck inside the lineup.

The conditions at Carola can be semi-crowded at times, especially at size, so it’s wise to keep an eye on other surfers around you. The uneven reef adds an element of unpredictability, which can make for some exciting sessions if you’re up for the challenge. Just remember, experience is key here, especially when the waves are bigger.
