Castelo is a long, dune-backed beach with shifty peaks strung along a big sandy bay. The banks tend to move around, and the most reliable ones form near the walkways and cut-throughs in the dunes, where offshore wind helps the sand build up. On its day it serves up fun, walling rights and lefts, though those same walls can close out as the tide shifts.
When It Works
Castelo is at its best on small to medium days, drawing swell from west-southwest to west (WSW-W) and working from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. When the size jumps it tends to close out, so cleaner, smaller days are usually the pick. The main season runs autumn through spring, roughly September to May. Keep an eye out for rips when it gets big.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind, with a workable wind window from north-northeast to east (NNE-E). It breaks through low, mid, and high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
There is plenty of room to spread out here, so expect a fairly quiet lineup with a relaxed, somewhat reserved feel. It suits everyone from beginners to experts and handles just about any board, from shortboard, funboard, and longboard to fish, SUP, or bodyboard. Paddling out is easy when it is small, though channels get harder to find as the size builds.
