Overview
Castilnovo is a sand-bottomed beach break, part of the very long beach that runs from Conil to El Palmar and throws up a handful of excellent peaks when a good, clean swell arrives. The waves break both left and right, and the setting is still largely untouched, though there are proposals for a hotel at the El Palmar end.
When It Works
The peaks come alive on a good, clean swell. It works best on a west swell but will pick up anything from southwest to northwest, and it's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind. The break works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The peaks suit intermediate surfers. Crowds are essentially nonexistent here thanks to the long walk in, so you'll often have the waves to yourself. On such an open beach, keep an eye out for rips and longshore drift.
Access
Use the Torre de Castilnovo as your marker, with about three excellent peaks spread between Conil and El Palmar. Getting there is a bit of a long walk from the tower, and there's free parking.
