Castlerock Surf Forecast Guide

Castlerock is a sand-bottomed spot on the Northern Irish coast that serves up easy, rolling peelers along the strand, making it a friendly option for beginners and longboarders when the swell is small. East of the village sits the Barmouth, where two stone jetties mark the mouth of the River Bann and the groynes have anchored sandbanks on either side. That setup throws a long right-hander on the Castlerock side and a left on the Portstewart side.

When It Works

The banks draw swell from northwest to north (NW-N), and it comes together best on a north (N) swell. Castlerock is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, with medium swells lighting up the Barmouth banks. Push past that and it turns rippy and starts to close out.

Wind and Tide

Look for offshore wind out of the south (S). It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call, with mid-tide the pick on medium swells at the Barmouth.

Local Tips

With its gentle peelers, this is a welcoming spot for beginners finding their feet.

Access

Drive along the sands from Castlerock or Portstewart and park right on the beach, with free parking and camping nearby. Bear in mind that water quality around these breaks can be dubious because of the rivermouth.
