Overview
Charpencaye is the right-hand reefbreak at Anse Charpentier. The take-off drops straight into a tube section before a fast, peeling wall runs down to a reef ledge. It breaks over shallow dead coral studded with rock and sea urchins, tucked into a wild bay that also has a beachbreak working on the far side.
When It Works
Charpencaye pulls in swell from north through east, with a northeast swell the best match. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and stays consistent, so the setup lines up more often than not.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest offshore wind. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
This is strictly an expert's wave, and it's a favourite with bodyboarders who don't mind the shallow reef. Strong currents run through the bay and swimming is banned outright, so it's not a spot to take lightly. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
Access
Getting in and out means a bit of reef dancing over the shallow coral. There's free roadside parking nearby.
