Overview
Chatarra is regarded by many as one of the most incredible lefts in the Caribbean, and on the right day it is the best wave on the island. Muscular swells slam into a flat-ledged lava reef and throw the meanest, most perfect left barrel in Puerto Rico. When the swell swings north it becomes more of an A-frame, and at that angle it can turn dangerously shallow if there is size behind it.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from northwest through north, with northwest the best match. It is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and it really needs a decent-sized swell before it starts showing its teeth. Late summer and fall deliver tropical cyclone swells, while late fall through early spring is the more consistent window, so autumn and winter are the seasons to watch.
Wind and Tide
Look for south offshore wind, with a workable wind window running southeast through south to west-southwest. Clean morning conditions are the usual play unless you luck into one of those rare offshore days. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, best suited to shortboards and bodyboards. Expect a busy lineup when it is working, and be ready for a good amount of paddling once there is real surf on it. The vibe is friendly enough, but the lineup has a clear pecking order worth respecting.
Access
Parking is right there at the spot. Getting out is a thrill, since there is only one entry and exit point that is not laced with urchins, and high tide makes that a little easier. The shallow lava reef is the main hazard once you are on it.
