Overview
Chickens is a left-hand reef break in the Maldives that peels over dead coral. It's best known for long, playful lefts, and on the right day the wave can throw out barrels holding for up to ten seconds.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southeast through south, with southeast swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and it breaks consistently, though the quality of any given session can swing quite a bit. When a major southeast swell lines up with strong south winds, the rights at Meerufenfushi Corner can be worth a look, but expect fast, zipping lines rather than anything forgiving.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. Southwest wind is the one to watch out for, as the barrels shut down once it gets up. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
