Chincoteague sits at the southern end of Assateague Island, inside the National Wildlife Refuge, and shows the same surf character as the Maryland breaks to the north. It breaks over sand and throws both lefts and rights, with a pronounced trench between the shorebreak and the outside sandbar. When the surf is small, that setup means plenty of pumping and bouncing to link sections together.
When It Works
The break draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S) and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. It's a consistent spot, so rideable waves show up often. On big northeast swells, look to the horseshoe-shaped southern point of the island for a shot at some longer lefts. Be ready for it to get wild and out of control quickly once the size jumps.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind to clean it up; the spot won't tolerate any east wind. It surfs on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Crowds are rare here, so you can usually count on an uncrowded lineup when it's on.
Access
The breaks north of the car parks are foot access only. To reach the lefts down south at Toms Cove Hook, you can pay a hefty permit for the Oversand Vehicle Route and skip the 3 mile / 5 km soft-sand slog. There's no campground inside the refuge, but you'll find camping in Chincoteague itself.
