Overview
Chokusen is a right-hand reef point that wraps around a headland, so it serves up a long ride down powerful walls with the occasional cover-up. It breaks over an uneven reef and needs some size before it really gets going.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with southeast (SE) swell the best match, and a strong east swell is what really wakes it up. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and consistency is moderate, so it comes and goes rather than turning on every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind out of the southwest (SW), with a workable window running from south through west. It can break across low, mid, and high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, and the lineup tends to get moderately busy when it's on. When typhoon swells arrive, a left breaks deep in the bay and can pull the goofy-footers away from the point.
