Cloud 9 is a perfect, top-to-bottom barrelling reef peak that breaks over live coral off Siargao. It's short but sweet when everything lines up, sucking in swell and handling pretty large faces before it maxes out. The peak throws both ways: the rights are the standout, while the lefts are shorter but just as hollow off the take-off before they quickly shut down.
When It Works
Cloud 9 draws swell from north to east (N-E), with northeast (NE) the best match. The more east in the swell the better, since that keeps the channel open for a safe exit, while a north to northeast direction tends to slam it closed. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and breaks consistently through the season.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind, which holds up the coveted rights nicely. It works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide the better call. Higher water also improves makeability, as the coral sits challengingly close to the surface.
Local Tips
This is one for expert surfers. Confident, nimble, experienced surfers will love the tight, fast peak, while intermediates may struggle. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, and the tight take-off zone can mean locals and expats jostling for the bombs, though patience is usually rewarded by a generally friendly local crew. If it's too packed, nearby Jacking Horse or Quicksilver are worth a look. The annual pro contest packs the place out too, great for the party and pageantry but tough for scoring uncrowded waves.
Access
A walk along the snaking, recently rebuilt pier gets you within 200m of the peak and avoids a lot of the coral reef.
