Surigao del Norte sits on the Pacific edge of the Philippines, a province built around reef breaks over live coral where swell arrives from the northern and eastern quarter. This is the home of Cloud 9, the barreling right that put Siargao on the world surf map, but the coastline holds far more than one famous wave.
Nearly every break here is a reef, with coral the standard bottom and only a single sand-bottomed beach break in the mix. That shapes how you surf the area: reef awareness and respect for shallow sections matter from one end of the coast to the other. The waves come alive when groundswell pushes in from the northeast through the east and wraps onto the reefs, and the cleanest conditions arrive on a westerly wind, with southwest also working at a good number of spots. Early mornings, before the sea breeze fills in, tend to be the call.
The surf clusters around a handful of towns. Cabitoonan holds the deepest concentration of breaks, Union and Libertad add several more, and smaller pockets sit around Catagnan and Consolacion. Notable spots include Cloud 9, Barrio, and Caridad, spanning the marquee reef and quieter options nearby. Most waves want a little size to switch on, breaking from around two to three feet on up, and the heavier reefs hold well overhead when a solid pulse lines up.
Surf spots in Surigao del Norte lean toward intermediate and expert surfers. The reef setups reward confident paddling and clean wave reading, and several breaks sit firmly in experienced-only territory. Options for beginners are limited, so newer surfers are better off starting on the gentler corners and building up before taking on the coral. Tide is forgiving at many breaks, with much of the coast working through most of the tide, though it still pays to check the stage against the specific reef.
The province catches its most reliable surf when Pacific groundswell is running, and a light offshore morning is often the difference between a mushy session and a clean one. Come ready for coral, keep an eye on the tide, and you will find a coastline with genuine variety, from the world-class power of Cloud 9 to mellower reefs tucked around the smaller towns.
