Coal Point is Bruny Island's best pointbreak, a left that unloads over an uneven reef of rock and kelp. It comes alive on a strong pulse of southeast swell: the first section runs fast with a challenging take-off, then barrels down the shelf before letting up on the inside.
When It Works
The point needs a solid pulse of swell to fire, drawing from east to south, with southeast (SE) the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Consistency is on the low-to-medium side, so the good windows don't line up often, but they are worth waiting for when they do.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. The fast take-off, barrelling shelf, dry sucking reef, and tricky entry and exit all add up to a real chance of injury, so it rewards surfers who know what they're doing. The local crew covet the spot, and since it doesn't break often, expect a bit of vibe if your manners and skills aren't dialled in. Plan on a moderately busy lineup when it's on. For mellower options, head further north along Adventure Bay.
