Coconuts is a heavy, horseshoeing right-hand barrel that can be perfect on its day. It breaks over coral and is probably the best right-hand barrel on the island, comparable to more famous waves like Lance's Right in the Mentawais. It can also be unpredictable and fickle, so it rewards patience as much as skill.
When It Works
Look for southwest swell, which is what lines this reef up. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and chest high to overhead is where it really comes alive. The season runs May through August. Expect a lot of paddling once it gets overhead.
Wind and Tide
Northeast wind is the one to watch for here. High tide is the best call, and a rising tide is generally better than a dropping one.
Local Tips
Bring a shortboard. This is a wave for intermediate and expert surfers, and the coral bottom and barrelling shape leave little room to hesitate. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, with resort guests making up much of the crowd, and the atmosphere can feel a little reserved. The water is clean. The main hazard is a simple one: don't turn your back to the ocean.
Access
Getting out is either a 5-minute boat ride or a 300-meter paddle.
